» Acai Bowl (2024)

Acai bowls are truly the breakfast of champs! The smoothie bowl is so thick and sweetened to perfection to fuel your morning in the most refreshing way. The best part is customizing the toppings to your liking with peanut butter, granola, fresh fruit, and chia seeds!

After eggs, acai bowls are definitely my favorite breakfast food! My tummy just loves them so much because of all the fruits packed into it and it’s so cold and refreshing. It literally fuels me all day long. I used to make them all the time back when I lived at my parents’ home for all my siblings and parents. I got them all obsessed with acai bowls and it’s so much cheaper to make them at home than going to a juice spot that will charge you an arm and a leg for them!

How to Make It

Making acai bowls are very simple! This is the way I like to make it although there are so many variations out there. All you need really is frozen fruit and acai. The more simple the better in my opinion.

My go-to frozen fruit to add and what I think is the best combo is frozen bananas and strawberries. I’ve been to acai spots before where the acai base just tastes like straight sugar and no other flavor. With this combo, the frozen bananas adds a natural sweetness that’s not overwhelming and the strawberries balance that sweetness out with a bit of tanginess. Some other frozen fruits I like to add sometimes too are blueberries and raspberries but lately it’s just been bananas and strawberries!

For the acai, you can either buy frozen packets from the grocery store or the powdered version. Either one works fine. I used to only use the acai powder but I love the frozen packets because they thicken up the smoothie base even more! Just make sure the acai packets are the unsweetened kind or else it will have white sugar added to it which is completely not necessary.

Now for the blender, you need to make sure to use a very strong blender – Ninja has a blender just for smoothie bowls and Vitamix is amazing as well. These blenders are so powerful that you don’t need to add any liquid which means the base will be very thick. If your blender is not strong, it’s ok. You can add a bit of milk to help blend the acai and frozen fruit but it might thin out the smoothie bowl consistency.

If you do prefer it sweeter, you can add some honey. If you prefer it more tangy, add a small squeeze of lime juice.
