Baked Chicken Parmesan Recipe (1)

I’m all about a quick, but nice, meal on busy weeknights. Who am I kidding – I like a quick easy meal any day of the week! Even better is a recipe that I love that’s made in 30 minutes (or less) like this baked chicken parmesan recipe.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Crispy Chicken: The chicken bakes in a 450˚ F oven which creates a crispy crust on the chicken that is then topped with the tomato sauce.
  • 30 Minute Recipe: I love how fast the recipe can be made, and my husband loves that it comes with pasta.
  • Rich and Bold Sauce: You can make your own tomato sauce or go the easy route with your favorite canned tomato based sauces.
  • Oven Baked Chicken Parmesan – This recipe uses the oven at a high temperature which means you will not be heating up hot oil to fry the chicken breasts.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Get a large pot of water boiling. When it comes to a boil, add angel hair pasta and cook according to the directions.
  2. In a bowl or shallow dish, melt three tablespoons of butter. In a separate bowl combine 1/2 cup of Italian bread crumbs and 3 Tablespoons of shredded Parmesan cheese.
  3. Dip the chicken breast in the butter to thoroughly coat and then submerge the buttered chicken into the bread crumbs mixture to fully cover. Add to an oven-ready pan that’s been sprayed with cooking spray.
  4. Bake in a preheated 450° F oven for 20 – 25 minutes or until fully cooked or until the internal temperature reaches 165˚ F.
  5. Remove cooked breasts from oven. Spoon the tomato sauce onto the cooked breasts. Add fresh mozzarella cheese and bake for another 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
  6. Serve hot over cooked spaghetti pasta and additional tomato sauce. This pairs well with a salad.

Recipe Tips:

Chicken Breast Size: Some of the chicken breasts available in the grocery store are so big – I wonder how the chicken even walked. Am I the only one? For this reason, I highly recommend buying reasonably sized chicken breasts.I bought a 1.26 lb package that contained three separate breasts making them less than 7 ounces each. If you buy a large variety, one of two things needs to happen. One, you’ll need to bake them longer taking away the beautiful 30 minutes or less from this recipe. Or, two, you’ll have to cut them in half before the butter and bread crumbs mixture is applied. They will cook faster the more standard size they are supposed to be…naturally.

How to Serve: Once the cheese is melted, top the cooked pasta with some more sauce goodness and then your chicken. Your delicious meal is ready. It looks awesome. You feel awesome. And from start to finish you’re done in 30 minutes.

Love your discussion of normal sized chickens! LOL So right, I go to cook “a chicken breast” and get such a wide range of sizes! And having ready made sauce, your own or commercial, really speeds a meal up – but it has to be one you like (and one you like and can just keep in the cabinet is invaluable.)

FAQs

What is the difference between chicken parmigiana and chicken parmesan? ›

Chicken Parmesan and chicken Parmigiana are just different names for the same exact recipe. And, with a name like “chicken Parmigiana”, you might assume that this recipe is Italian. While it has roots in Italy (in a way), chicken Parmesan is all-American.

What is the best way to bake chicken covered or uncovered? ›

Larger cuts, such as whole chickens or bone-in pieces, often benefit from covered baking to ensure thorough and even cooking. Smaller cuts, like chicken breasts or tenders, can be baked uncovered for quick results. Lastly, think about the desired texture and flavor you're trying to achieve.

What goes best with chicken parmesan? ›

Chicken parmesan is traditionally served with a good pasta cooked al dente, as always. If you or your guests prefer rice, serve it with a good brown or saffron rice. That adds an extra layer of flavor. The rice can be “editorialized” by adding roasted garlic or even pine nuts.

Why is mozzarella used on chicken parmesan? ›

Slices of fresh mozzarella melted over the browned chicken breasts and simmered marinara sauce add moist, soft texture and milky flavor.

How do you keep chicken parm from getting soggy? ›

To maximize crispiness, I use panko breadcrumbs and fry the chicken in a little more oil (about an inch) than you might normally use when making parm. As soon as the cutlets are nicely browned and cooked all the way though, drain them on a rack or paper towels. They're crunchy; this will help them stay that way.

Should I use aluminum foil when baking chicken? ›

Many people opt for boneless, skinless chicken breasts for ease, but you can bake any cut of chicken in foil. Chicken breasts work well with the foil treatment, as steaming keeps the meat juicy and it cooks quickly even with the addition of veggies or starches. Chicken tenders would be a great cut to bake in foil, too.

Do you put water in the pan when baking chicken? ›

It's usually not necessary to add water to the pan for a roast chicken: the steam created by the water can prevent the skin from becoming browned and crisp.

What is the best temperature to bake chicken? ›

Let's start out by saying 500 degrees isn't a temperature we'd recommend for chicken. Given the fact that drumsticks and thighs are dark meat and won't dry out as easily as breasts, the range from 350 to 450 degrees is okay for baking them. 350 to 375 is generally best for breasts.

Why is parmesan called parmigiana? ›

The cheese we know as parmigiana—or parmesan—is named after the city of Parma in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, where the delicate cheese was first produced.

What do Americans call chicken parmigiana? ›

North America

The dish, also known as "chicken parm", originated in the northeast United States from Italian immigrants, and became a popular staple in restaurants serving Italian-American cuisine by the 1950s. Home versions also grew in popularity.

Why do Americans call it chicken parmesan? ›

Some believe that it was created in Parma, hence the name. Others believe it comes from a Sicilian word that means slabs on a roof, referring to the thin slices of chicken covered in the sauce.

What is another name for chicken parmesan? ›

Pollo alla parmigiana in Italian, but affectionately referred by Aussies as Parma, Parmi or “a schnitty with tomato sauce and cheese”, you'll love this homemade recipe with extra crispy schnitzel, best ever parmigiana sauce and juicy marinated chicken.
