What has happened to Brach's candy? ›

Brach's Confections was sold to Farley's and Sathers Candy Company. Ferrara Pan merged with Farley's and Sathers to form Ferrara Candy Company, where Brach's is still produced.

"Chicken Feed" was the original candy name, with production starting in the late 1880s. It was first invented in the 1880s by a Wunderle Candy Company employee, George Renninger. Wunderle Candy Company was the first to produce the candy in 1888.

But the company rebounded and by the end of the 1950s, Brach's produced 4 million pounds of candy per week. Ownership of the company has changed multiple times since the 1960s, but today, Brach's Candy is made under the Ferrara Candy brand, and the candy is now manufactured in Mexico.

It was sugar itself that was the downfall of the huge factory as the cost of domestic sugar went through the roof in the 80s and 90s making the giant candy operation unsustainable in the US. In 2003 the plant finally closed, locking its doors and leaving the sprawling operation empty.
