How do you calculate GPA with F? ›

If you had 90 credits behind your 2.6 GPA, 3 more credits with an F would lower you GPA to 2.5 (2.516). To find out what an F would mean to your GPA, multiply your number of credits by 2.6; then, divide that number by (number of credits plus 3).

Your grades do matter. An “F” will eliminate any chance you have of ever getting a 4.0 GPA (but for that matter, so will a “B” or anything but an “A”). But most people in your class won't have a 4.0 GPA—you're in good company. You may have to re-take that class, but that won't be the end of the world either.

If you have one “F” and all other grades in a 40-course program are “A” grades, your GPA will drop from a 4.0 to a 3.9. So, your existing GPA will be impacted, but will not be “ruined.” If you have one “F” and all other grades in a 40-course program are “B” grades, your GPA will drop from a 3.0 to a 2.93.

The lowest GPA you can technically get is 0.0, but that's usually for unweighted GPAs. In most cases, a 1.0 is considered the lowest GPA, indicating a D average. It's worth noting that some colleges have GPA cutoffs for admissions, typically falling between 2.0 and 2.5.
