Flu Outbreak: Children Hit Hardest as Cases in Northern Ireland Surge

A pediatric emergency medicine consultant describes the current flu outbreak as the most severe she has ever seen. In just one week, flu cases among adults and children in Northern Ireland rose by 77%, from 273 to 484 confirmed cases, according to official figures.

Children under the age of five have been particularly affected, with higher rates of hospitalization due to the flu compared to any other age group during the same period. The positivity rate for influenza among children aged five to 14 in Northern Ireland was a staggering 52.3% in the week ending November 23.

Dr. Julie-Ann Maney, working at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, confirms her department's extreme busyness due to the surge in cases. She notes that this is the most severe influenza outbreak she has encountered since becoming a consultant in 2010.

The current outbreak is fueled by a highly virulent strain of influenza, causing high temperatures and prolonged flu symptoms in children. This year's flu season has started earlier than usual, with a higher number of cases, according to Dr. Peter Naughton, a health protection consultant with the Public Health Agency (PHA).

Dr. Thomas Bourke, another consultant paediatrician at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, reports a doubling of cases. He urges parents to use the hospital's symptom checker on their website to determine the severity of their child's symptoms before visiting the emergency department.

The Belfast Trust website provides valuable information on flu prevention, including regular hand washing, avoiding sharing cups or cutlery, and encouraging children to sneeze into tissues. It also emphasizes the importance of yearly flu vaccines in reducing the risk of children contracting and transmitting the flu to family members.

Despite the current outbreak, Dr. Bourke highlights vaccination as the primary defense against the flu. He mentions that 862 children and young people were hospitalized with influenza in Northern Ireland last year, and data from the southern hemisphere suggests an even higher number of admissions this year.
