How to Find Fabric GSM without Using GSM Cutter? (1)

You might know that GSM stands for grams per square meter. Fabric GSM is used to represent the fabric weight and thickness of the fabric, which is an essentialfabric quality parameter. In the earlier posts, I have discussed the method of calculating fabric GSM using the testing instruments (GSM cutter and weighing balance) and yarn count and fabric construction details.

In this post,I have shared Do it Yourself (DIY) guide to finding fabric gsm without using the GSM cutter device. Follow the below steps.

  1. Cut a fabric sample of 10 cmX10 cm
  2. Measurethe weightof that specimen (sample) in grams. Here you got fabric weight per 100 square-centimeter.
  3. Convert fabric weight into grams persquare meter. To calculate it multiply above weight by 100. This will be GSM of the fabric.
  4. For accuracy test with multiple (e.g. 5 samples) samples and calculate average GSM.

Fabric specimen

An example:

The weight of the 5 specimens are as following:

Specimen-1: Weight - 1.65 grams
Specimen-2: Weight - 1.60 grams
Specimen-3: Weight - 1.55 grams
Specimen-4: Weight - 1.62 grams
Specimen-5: Weight - 1.58 grams
--------------------------------------------------
Total weight = 8.00 grams
The average weight of the specimen is 1.600 grams per 100 square centimeters.
Now convert the weight into grams per square meters by multiplying the average weight by 100.

Therefore, sample fabric GSM is 1.60 X 100 = 160 GSM.

Note: You can cut another dimension than mentioned in step-1 for the specimen. You need to convert the measured weight into per square meter to get thecorrect fabric gsm.

GSM cutter is a circular cutter which cuts 1/100 of a square meter of fabric area.

FAQs

How to calculate GSM without cutting? ›

For example, if 500 sheets weigh 20 pounds and have an uncut size of 39 inches by 54 inches, then the density would be 0.5 pounds per square inch (20 divided by 39). To calculate GSM, multiply the density by 1,000. In our example above, that would give us a GSM of 500 (0.5 multiplied by 1,000).

How to find out GSM of fabric? ›

In order to calculate the GSM of a fabric, you will need to cut 100 square centimeters of fabric from 4-5 areas of the same fabric. To get the same area, a GSM cutter is used. A GSM Cutter helps in getting even sizes of fabrics for testing. The area of the fabrics cut by the GSM cutter is 100 square centimeters.

What is the formula for GSM calculation? ›

What is the GSM formula? To determine the GSM (Grams per Square Meter) of paper, you can employ the GSM formula. The GSM Calculation will be done by multiplying the weight of the paper sample in grams by 1000 and then dividing the result by the area of the sample in square centimeters.

How do you manually check paper GSM? ›

Place the paper on the scale, and weigh it. Divide the weight of the paper by the number of square meters in the sheet to calculate the GSM. For example, if a sheet of paper weighs 80 g and has an area of 1 m2, then its GSM would be 80 g/m2.

How do you find GSM from thickness? ›

A rule-of-thumb then is to multiply specific density values by 1000 to obtain the weight of a sheet that is one millimeter in thickness. As an example, the specific density of PP ranges from 0.855 g/cc to 0.946 g/cc. A one millimeter thick layer of PP would then have an areal weight between 855 gsm and 946 gsm.

How do you find the GSM of a towel? ›

Examples: Towel A weighs 58g and measures 16 by 16 inches. Divide the weight in grams 58 by 0.165, this towel is 351 GSM, quite plush.

How many GSM is 100% cotton? ›

Cotton Fabric : 180 - 220 GSM (summer season), 300 gsm (for winter), 100% Cotton, Raw white & Dyed, Plain Buyer.

What is GSM examples fabric? ›

What is GSM equal to? ›

GSM stands for “grams per square meter” which is a measurement of how “thick “ the terry is on your towel. To put it in perspective, a 350 GSM towel is a product you'd find in a federal institution (our Arctic collection).

What is 70 GSM equal to? ›

GSM is the metric used to measure the weight of paper. So, a 70 GSM paper means the paper weighs 70 grams per square meter, whereas 80 GSM implies the paper weighs 80 grams per square meter. For example, any paper ranging between 35gsm and 55gsm is used for newspapers.

What is the diameter of GSM cutter? ›

Diameter of GSM Cutter is 113mm. Area of GSM Round Cutter is 100 cm sq. GSM Cutter is made of aluminium body for light weight.

How to use GSM tester? ›

Testing Procedure
  1. The kit comes with a standardised round cutter equipped with sharp blades.
  2. Place the Paper Specimen on the platform.
  3. Remove any crease and cut a circular sample using the cutter.
  4. Now weigh the sample using the digital balance.
  5. Determine the Grammage of the Paper using the below mentioned formula.

How to calculate paper thickness? ›

Sample calculation of paper thickness

Since a ream of paper contains 500 sheets of paper , we divide 2 inches by 500. This will then give us a value of 0.004 inches (about 0.0102 cm), which is the thickness of a single piece of paper. For values as small as that number, we can use the caliper unit of measure.

How do you test for grammage? ›

The grammage or 'basis weight' of paper, board and tissue is determined by weighing a known area after conditioning in a standard 23°C, 50%rh environment for a minimum of 24 hours. Results are usually quoted as gsm or g/m2. This is included as part of our Paper Proficiency Service.

How do you convert GSM to weight? ›

Gsm to Lb Conversion Formula
  1. 1 gsm = 0.676 lb Text paper. So, multiply each gsm by 0.676.
  2. 1 gsm = 0.369 lb Cover paper. So, multiply each gsm by 0.369. For example: 157 gsm = 106.1 lb Text paper (157 x 0.676) 157 gsm = 57.9 lb Cover paper (157 x 0.369)

How do you calculate GSM of foil? ›

This round sheet cut form the sample is weighed which gives the weight of the material per 100sq cm. When the weight is multiplied by 100, it gives the weight of the material per sq. meter which is the GSM value of the material being tested.
