Lyn Mode is an initial tutorial mode, and has 11 chapters and 1 gaiden chapters. Eliwood Mode follows Lyn Mode and is the main story mode. It has 21 chapters and 6 gaiden chapters.
To unlock Hector's story, you must first beat the game once. After that, when you start a new game, you'll have the option of either starting with Lyn's story, or skipping Lyn and doing either Eliwood's or Hector's story.
