Why the Blue Jays Should Keep an Eye on Hoffman
Hoffman, a seasoned right-handed pitcher, was a pivotal signing for the Blue Jays last winter, contributing significantly during the 2025 season. As he prepares to enter the second year of his three-year, $33 million contract, initial doubts about whether he might have been overvalued are beginning to materialize.
In the 2025 season, Hoffman recorded a 9-7 win-loss record along with 33 saves; however, his 4.37 ERA raised some red flags. The seven blown saves he had during the season sparked serious questions about his reliability, particularly concerning playoff performance.
Though he faltered at times in the regular season, Hoffman surprisingly excelled during the postseason, allowing just two runs over 12.1 innings in 10 appearances. While his playoff performance was commendable, it does not erase the struggles he faced in the regular season, warranting the label of being overpaid.
When compared to his previous achievements with the Philadelphia Phillies, the production level the Blue Jays received from Hoffman was underwhelming. As he steps into a crucial role for the team in 2026, his performance will be vital as the Blue Jays aim to meet their ambitious goals for the upcoming season.
