Despite facing challenges, including the termination of the National Links Trust's lease by the previous administration, the spirit of service shone brightly. Every year, Langston Golf Course hosts a special MLK Day of Service event. This year was no exception, with dozens of dedicated volunteers rolling up their sleeves to make a difference.
Volunteers spent their Martin Luther King Jr. Day morning tackling invasive plants, grasses, and shrubs along the Anacostia River and Kingman Lake. But here's where it gets interesting... These efforts are crucial for the health of the local ecosystem.
Mike McCartin, co-founder of the National Links Trust, shared that this annual event is a cherished tradition. He highlighted the importance of removing invasive species from the buffer zones along the lake and river.
One of the primary targets was the bush honeysuckle. Volunteer Bianca Andre, armed with an environmental studies degree, explained that removing it helps combat the spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect that thrives on it. By removing the honeysuckle, they're disrupting the insect's habitat, hoping to reduce infestations.
While not all volunteers were experts in plant life, they all understood the significance of Langston Golf Course. As McCartin put it, "Langston is an incredible place with an incredible history." It's a place where Black golfers, displaced from a course near the Lincoln Memorial in the 1920s, fought for 10 years to build a new course during a time of segregation.
Bianca Hill, a volunteer, shared that Langston has been a part of her family's life for a long time, with her uncles having worked as caddies there. She appreciates the history and the opportunity for affordable golf that Langston provides for everyone.
