Leicester: The All-Women Punk Rock Band Capital of the UK | Riotous Collective Story (2026)

Prepare to be inspired by the incredible story of how Leicester became the UK's all-women punk rock band capital!

In recent years, a remarkable movement has taken over the city's music scene, thanks to the vision of one extraordinary woman, Ruth Miller. Her mission? To empower older women to take center stage in the music industry and prove that age is just a number.

Ruth founded The Unglamorous, a music project that taught women to play instruments and form bands, with the goal of getting older women to perform live. Sadly, Ruth passed away in October 2023, but her legacy lives on through the Riotous Collective, a not-for-profit community organization she inspired. With over 80 members and counting, the collective continues to thrive, creating a safe space for women to enjoy music and feel empowered.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Riotous Collective isn't just about music; it's about breaking down barriers and challenging societal norms. Janet Berry, aka Planet Janet, a 56-year-old member, explains, "It's that feeling of becoming invisible as you age, like no one listens to you anymore. But with the collective, we're proving that age is just a number and that we can still have fun and make an impact."

Janet's story is just one of many inspiring tales. After answering an ad promising to turn older women into punk rockers in just 66 days, she joined Velvet Crisis, a band formed on the very same day. And the results? Nothing short of transformative! Janet says, "It improved my memory and mental health. Being able to sing about my frustrations was therapeutic. I'm still me, but so much happier."

The Riotous Collective regularly hosts taster sessions for aspiring female punk rockers. Michelle Haggerty-Wood and Lou Baker, hosts of a menopause podcast, are living proof that life begins at 50! Lou says, "We're saying 'yes' to everything we've ever wanted to try."

Christine Riedhofer, or Whizzy McFly as she's known on stage, is a guitarist and singer in The Boilers, another Riotous Collective band. She's taught numerous new recruits and believes in keeping things simple: "I teach them an E chord and tell them that's all they need!"

Christine is proud of the confidence boost the collective has given women, both on and off the stage. She says, "Women used to be hesitant about going out at night, but now, with all these amazing women's bands, they know they'll be in a safe space. That's the biggest thing."

So, why should men have all the fun? The Riotous Collective is a testament to the power of music and community, proving that age is no barrier to creativity and self-expression.

What do you think? Is this movement a step towards a more inclusive music industry? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
