Major Motorway Mayhem! This morning, drivers in the West Midlands are facing significant travel headaches as lane closures on both the M6 and M5 are causing substantial delays.
The M6 Southbound is experiencing particularly rough going. A lane closure is in effect between Junction 11 (Cannock) and Junction 10 (Walsall). Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports that this is due to an accident, leading to queueing traffic. While the road is described as 'busy but moving' in some sections, the impact is undeniable. Imagine being stuck in slow-moving traffic, watching the clock tick by – it's a frustrating start to the day for many!
And this is the part most people miss... the ripple effect of these closures. Even if you're not directly on the affected stretch, the congestion can spill over onto surrounding routes, making your entire journey longer.
Meanwhile, the M5 Southbound isn't escaping the disruption either. An earlier accident and subsequent lane closure between the M6 Interchange (Junction 8) and Junction 1 (West Bromwich) means that slow traffic is also a reality for drivers in this area. This means journeys that might normally be straightforward are now taking considerably more time.
But here's where it gets controversial... some might argue that the reporting of these incidents, while necessary, can sometimes heighten driver anxiety, leading to more aggressive driving or further delays as people slow down to look. Is it possible that the way we communicate traffic issues inadvertently adds to the problem?
Adding to the regional woes, Oxford Street in Bilston is currently closed in both directions due to a police incident. This further complicates travel for those in the Black Country.
