Out of all the Straw Hat Pirates crew members in One Piece, Usopp is known as the comical relief and by far its most cowardly member. Now, while Usopp’s cowardice might not be a reflection of his true powers, we certainly did not see much of the latter because of the former. That is why we have ventured on a journey to discover how strong Usopp is in our earlier articles, but this article, while still focusing on Usopp, will give you a completely different aspect of his story. In this article, you will find out why Usopp is infamously called “God” Usopp in the series and how that nickname contributes to his story in general.
Usopp is called “God” Usopp because of a funny situation in Dressrosa. Namely, as the Straw Hat Pirates liberated the people from Donquixote’s terror, with Usopp saving thousands of people from their lives as slave toys, a giant picked up Usopp to show him to the people he saved; simultaneously, Sabo accidentally made a whole in the roof, through which light shone directly above Usopp, thus making it seem like he is a deity, which explains the nickname.
The rest of this article will focus on the character of Usopp in One Piece. We will tell you about the “God” Usopp nickname and how it came to be, but also how it is tied to the events in Dressrossa and to Usopp’s personality in general. Usopp is not a deity, but he became “God” Usopp after a series of hilarious events
The story of this nickname is tied to the Dressrosa Arc, i.e., the moment when dwarves abducted Usopp and Robin. Usopp managed to free himself by posing as the descendant of Norland the Liar, whom the dwarves adore. He discovers that the dwarves have the same objective as the pirates: to destroy Smile’s factory. To get there, Usopp and Robin passed through a passage too narrow for Franky to enter. The duo stole uniforms from the port personnel who were next to the factory and infiltrated it incognito.
The dwarves attacked Sugar as Robin diverted attention and dispatched Trebol, his bodyguard when they arrived at the control tower where Sugar and Trebol were stationed. Usopp, who had remained hidden the entire time, was the only dwarf knocked unconscious by Trebol after the attack was unsuccessful. He fled, terrified. Usopp gathers his bravery in both hands and returns to the battle scene to face his duties after hearing the dwarves’ calls for assistance.
By admitting to the dwarfs that he is simply a regular pirate and not a famous hero, he reveals the truth to them. Usopp still chooses to target Trebol and Sugar despite this. Unfortunately, he is completely defeated. Sugar kills him by forcing him to consume Tatababasco, the spiciest pepper in the world, which was originally the “weapon” designed to cause Sugar to lose consciousness and allow all the toys to once again become human.
Usopp begins to make such a terrifying look while under the influence of the pepper that Sugar is absolutely taken aback and faints. This is how, despite losing, Usopp was able to take Sugar out cold and turn all of Dressrosa’s toys back into people.
The heads of Doflamingo’s rivals are given new bounties when the Birdcage is set up. Usopp receives the highest reward on his head and assumes the name “God” Usopp in retaliation for his deeds, which are to blame for the instability that currently rules the nation.
Usopp is transported by the dwarfs on the plateau in flower, which allows him to have a position in height and thereby defend against those who want his head and that of the other members of the group, in contrast to all the gladiators of the Colosseum who had become toys, especially the larger characters like Hajrudin the Giant, Don Chinjao, or even King Elizabello II.
The name quickly became popular, but it was given to Usopp after a series of hilarious moments. Namely, as we have said, Usopp passed out while fighting Sugar, but his passed-out face was so horrifying that Sugar actually passed out herself from the sheer sight of it. This, of course, resulted in the toy slaves reverting back to normal and hailing Usopp as their savior.
Hajrudin then picked up the unconscious Usopp, who, of course, had no idea what was going on, and lifted him up so that everyone could see their savior. At the same time, from up above, Sabo accidentally made a hole in the ceiling right above Usopp, which let down a beam of light right over Usopp, thus making it seem like some divine light. Seeing such a divine figure, Usopp was proclaimed “God” by the people he saved, and this is how the nickname was crafted – by mere chance and without Usopp’s knowing what was going on around him.
