What does transferring points mean? ›

Transferable points programs allow customers to earn credit card points when using certain credit cards, and those points can be transferred to any of their participating programs. So instead of just having points with one airline or hotel, you can transfer points to several different ones.

A few banks and rewards programs offer transferable points, but arguably the two most robust are Chase Ultimate Rewards® and American Express Membership Rewards. The other notable programs are Citi ThankYou Rewards and Capital One miles.

American Express has 17 airline and three hotel transfer partners. These partners include at least one useful option in each major airline alliance: SkyTeam, Star Alliance and Oneworld. You can transfer your Membership Rewards points to the following airline programs: Aer Lingus AerClub (1:1 ratio; transfers instant)

Chase credit cards that allow you to transfer to travel partners. Sapphire Reserve^®, Sapphire Preferred^® and Ink Business Preferred^® are the cards that offer Chase cardmembers the ability to transfer points to travel partners. Some of those partners also offer bonuses for transferred points.

Based on TPG's valuations, Chase points are worth 2.05 cents each, and United miles are worth 1.32 cents each. You'll lose theoretical value when you transfer Chase points since transferable points are inherently more valuable.
