The icemaker in a refrigerator can stop making ice for different reasons. If your icemaker is not producing any ice, check the following troubleshooting before considering service.
Make Sure the Power is ON
- Icemakers in the refrigerator can be turned off when ice is not needed, like during vacations. Depending on the model, you will turn it OFF or ON at the control panel or on the icemaker itself. Check your Owner's Manual for the instructions for your specific model.
- Tip: For icemakers with an ON/OFF switch on the icemaker, there will be a slide switch (side to side for on/off) or a toggle switch (up and down for on/off). You can see ON and OFF with slide switch icemakers. On toggle switch icemakers, the top is on and is marked I (ON); the bottom is off and is marked O (OFF).
Temperature Affects Ice Production
- The refrigerator and icemaker must be at proper temperature. The recommended fresh food temperature is 37°F; the freezer recommendedtemperature is 0°F.
- The icemaker must reach about 16°F before a cycle will begin. If the temperature in the freezer is too warm, ice cubes will take longer to form or may not form at all. Try adjusting the freezer temperature.
- Tip: A low food load in the freezer can affect the production of ice. More food in the freezer allows temperatures to remain more stable.
Clogged Water Filters Restrict Water Flow
- Filters should be changed every 6 months.If your refrigerator has a water filter, try replacing your water filter.Purchase a Refrigerator Filter.
- If there is new construction in your area, there can be more sediment entering the water system. This extra sediment can clog your filters more frequently than the recommended 6 months.
Look for Stuck Ice Cubes
- If the rake that ejects the cubes is stuck, the icemaker cannot complete its cycle. Check for ice that may be in the way. Use caution: the icemaker mold may be hot.
