The stakes couldn't be higher: After a marathon five-hour meeting, Russia and the US failed to reach a breakthrough on a peace deal to end the devastating war in Ukraine. This news comes after intense discussions between President Vladimir Putin and top envoys of former US President Donald Trump, a situation that underscores the complexity of this ongoing conflict.
Trump has made ending the war a stated foreign policy goal, even publicly criticizing both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at times. But here's where it gets controversial: The Kremlin confirmed that no compromises were reached during the talks, which involved Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The discussions in Moscow, which stretched past midnight, left Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign policy aide, stating that 'Compromises have not yet been found.' He added that there's still a significant amount of work to be done.
What does this mean? Putin reportedly reacted negatively to some US proposals. Witkoff, following the talks, briefed the White House from the US embassy in Moscow. Although a meeting between Putin and Trump isn't currently planned, Ushakov described the discussions as constructive, highlighting potential for US-Russian economic cooperation. Putin sent signals and greetings to Trump, but details were kept from the media.
The talks also addressed the 'territorial problem,' a Kremlin term for Russia's claims over the Donbas region. This is a key point of contention, as almost all countries recognize Donbas as part of Ukraine, even though Russia claims it as its own. Ushakov noted that some US proposals were 'more or less acceptable' but needed further discussion, while others were deemed unsuitable.
Witkoff, a real estate developer with a long-standing relationship with Trump, and Kushner, began their talks after a walk across Red Square. They met with Putin, Ushakov, and Kirill Dmitriev, Putin's envoy, with the help of interpreters.
On Tuesday, Trump described the situation as 'not an easy situation' and mentioned the war's high casualty rates, estimated at 25,000 to 30,000 per month. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 triggered the largest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the Cold War.
Adding to the complexity: A leaked set of 28 US draft peace proposals emerged in November, which alarmed Ukrainian and European officials. These proposals were perceived as potentially favoring Moscow's demands. European powers then presented a counter-proposal, leading to the US and Ukraine creating an 'updated and refined peace framework' in Geneva.
Zelensky, during a visit to Dublin, expressed concern about the US potentially losing interest in the peace process, stating that 'everything would depend on the talks in Moscow.' He emphasized the need for fairness and transparency, warning against any underhanded dealings.
A word of caution: Just before the Kremlin meeting, Putin stated that Russia doesn't want war with Europe, but if Europe initiated one, it would end swiftly. He also threatened to cut off Ukraine's access to the sea in response to drone attacks on Russian tankers. Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, interpreted Putin's remarks as a sign that he isn't ready to end the war.
