Procedure[edit]
Apply In-Person:
- To apply for Temporary or Special Motor Vehicle permit in person, the person who wants to do so should visit the nearest Registering authority in his/her province.
- The contact links for each province in South Africa are listed in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please click the link of your province and look for a nearest Municipality in your location.
- Contact the Municipality and get contact details about nearest Registering authority according to your location.
- Visit the nearest Registering authority and obtain the Application for a Temporary/Special Permit (TSP1) form, from the concerned department. Or click on the following link to download:Link
- Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
- Now, complete the application form with appropriate information about you and your vehicle for which permit is sought. Specify in the application form whether you want a temporary permit or special permit.
- Also, pay the prompted fees at the office and submit it to the concerned authority at the Registering authority, along with all the required documents.
- After submission, the authority will check for legibility of the application and the validity of the attached documents.
- And if the application information and all the documents are found in order, a Temporary or Special Motor Vehicle permit will be issued to the applicant on the same day of application.

Eligibility[edit]
- Any person, South African or a Permanent Resident and wants a temporary permit for his/her vehicle, is eligible to apply.
- The vehicle for which permit is sought should be registered, licensed and roadworthy.
Fees[edit]
- Please approach the local licensing office for the details about fees.
Validity[edit]
- A temporary motor vehicle permit is valid for 21 days. A special motor vehicle permit is valid for three days only.

Instructions[edit]
- Please fill the application form with appropriate information of the applicant. An applicant is mostly the title holder or owner of the vehicle.
- An application can also be lodged on behalf of an organisation as a proxy or representative. And the application should hold full information about the vehicle.
- The application should also hold the declaration and attestation of the applicant with name and date.
- It is important to note that a vehicle with a special permit may not carry goods or passengers.
- There is no limit to the number of special permits that can be issued per ownership. But, only one temporary permit is issued per vehicle ownership.
Required Information[edit]
- Name and surname of the applicant
- Identification number
- Email address
- License number, Vehicle register number and Chassis number/VIN of the motor vehicle
- Make and Series name of the motor vehicle
Need for the Document[edit]
- A temporary or special motor vehicle permit is needed for special and temporary purposes of the motor vehicle.
Information which might help[edit]
A temporary permit is used under the following circ*mstances:
- Delivering the vehicle within the Republic to the owner,
- Delivering the vehicle within the Republic by or to a motor dealer, or
- Registering and licensing purposes
A special motor vehicle permit is used under the following circ*mstances:
- Testing such motor vehicle;
- Proceeding to or returning from a place within the Republic where repairs are to be or have been effected to such motor vehicle;
- Reaching an examiner of vehicles or mass measuring apparatus; or
- Repossessing such motor vehicle
