Marine Corps Reserves. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, Columbia Bible College and Southwestern Theological Seminary. He was a veteran of World War II and retired as lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1983.

He attended Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of South Carolina and was former owner and operator of Alex S. Fant Exxon Distributor. Surviving are his wife, Malinda McLendon Fant; daughter, Gene Reid of High Point, N.C.; son, A.
