Having been through the process myself I know that working out what to buy for your first baby or what to ask for on your baby registry can be quite overwhelming.

So I’ve put together a complete guide to choosing the best baby registry, how baby registries work and what to put on your baby registry once you’ve decided which one is right for you.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF A BABY REGISTRY?

A baby registry is a service that allows you to create a list of all the products you want to have in time for the arrival of your new baby.

You might be wondering why you even need a baby registry.

Well, putting together your baby registry is a great way to get organized. It will help you decide on the essentials you need for your new baby and enable you to keep track of them and enable you to stick to a budget.

Still undecided about whether to start a baby registry? Wondering if it’s really worth it. Well, there are quite a few benefits to having a registry. Some of the universal benefits include:

HOW DOES A BABY REGISTRY WORK?

There are lots of stores and websites that offer baby registries. One of the benefits of having a baby registry is that you can share it with family, friends and baby shower guests so that they can choose which baby things to buy you as a gift.

The baby registry will be updated when someone makes a purchase from it, so you can keep track of what still needs to be bought.

Some baby registries, like Amazon, offer a completion discount, which means that you get a discount when you purchase all items remaining on your registry list.

HOW TO PLAN YOUR BABY REGISTRY

Here is a list of tips to help you plan your baby registry.

The list includes the things to consider when choosing a baby registry, when to start it, how to find the best registry/registries for you, the etiquette to follow and most importantly, what to put on your baby registry.

1. WHEN TO START YOUR BABY REGISTRY

The majority of expectant mums start to put their baby registry checklist together once they are past the first 12 weeks. This is a relatively safe point in pregnancy to start planning for the arrival of your new baby.

Even if you plan to find out the baby’s sex at around 20 weeks, you can still put together a list of the essentials you will need whether the baby is a boy or a girl. Then you can add more specific items later.

It is worth spending time thinking about how you intend to care for your baby and researching the things you will need to suit your plans.

It is also worth allowing yourself time to research different brands and products, so you feel confident with the items that you add to your registry list.

Do also bear in mind that you may well feel very tired and heavy during the last few weeks of pregnancy and also that a due date is only an estimate, so it’s worth making sure you have everything on your list with time to spare before your baby is due.

You will also want to have your baby registry to hand in good time to share with family, friends and baby-shower guests who want to buy you a gift.

Baby showers are generally held somewhere between six to eight months (24 to 34 weeks) of pregnancy, with a lot of moms-to-be having them from four to six weeks (32 to 34 weeks pregnant) before their baby’s due date.

2. SHOULD YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE BABY REGISTRY?

According to Baby Center, nearly 60% of moms-to-be create more than one registry. There are several good reasons for doing this.

• Have one main registry for yourself and one for gift-givers
• Mix and match brands and retailers you love

That said, it’s best not to sign up to too many registries otherwise you’re creating more work and stress for yourself than necessary. One great way to manage multiple registries is to use a universal baby registry.

A universal baby registry allows you to add any product from any store, big or small. Some universal registries, such as Babylist, even allow you to link several registries together in one place for you and your friends and family to have easy access to.

Retail giants Amazon and Target both allow you to add items from any store, so in effect have a universal registry functionality.

If you do start more than one baby registry, do make sure not to put the same items on more than one list, as you will inevitably end up with some duplicates that need returning.

• Shop from independent and local stores
• Some allow you to register experiences, services, help from friends and family as gifts

4. WHICH BABY REGISTRIES TO SIGN UP FOR

Choosing which are the best registries to sign up for can be more overwhelming than choosing the stuff to go on it! There are a LOT of them out there, each with its own benefits, discounts and incentives. Things to consider when deciding which baby registries to sign up for:

• User-friendliness – will everyone you share the list with be able to shop easily from it?
• Selection – is the selection wide enough and in line with your taste?
• Shopping preferences – do you or gift-givers want to be able to go into a store or are you happy to shop online?
• In-store or universal baby registry – is there a store that is super inline with your personal preferences or style? Do you like supporting small or local brands? Would you value being able to choose from any store?
• Welcome incentives/freebies – which registries give the best freebies that are of value to you?
• Your budget – no point registering with an upscale baby store if you’re on a tight budget
• Group gifting – does the registry allow more than one gift-buyer to pay towards the cost of a bigger ticket item?
• Completion discount amount – how many items to do you expect to have to buy for yourself rather than friends or family buying for you?
• Returns policy – you want to be able to return stuff you don’t need or use after the baby is born
• Shipping – does the registry offer free or discounted shipping?

If your brain is now swimming in information and you’d just like me to give you a simple but effective plan for managing your baby registry, here it is:

SIMPLE BABY REGISTRY PLAN

1. Sign up to Babylist
2. Select three retailer registries to sign up with
3. Make one of those retailers Amazon as it is pretty all-encompassing on its own and if you have Amazon Prime you get great extra benefits on shipping and completion discount (15%)
4. DON’T sync the items to the Babylist registry, use the registry linking function instead. There are two reasons for this:
   1. Buyers don’t have to go back to register the item as bought on Babylist
   2. You can use each registry’s completion discount
5. Add items from any other stores or brands that you want to your main Babylist registry
6. Add non-product requests to the list – cash fund,

With so much stuff out there for babies, it can be really hard to work out what to register for the baby. Clearly, there’s lots of stuff you could put on the list, but what do you actually need? What are the essentials? What are the nice to haves? What is not worth adding to your registry?

So I’ve put together the ultimate baby registry checklist to help you create a list of really useful and practical things to buy for the baby you are expecting.

HOW TO BUILD A BABY REGISTRY

Here are a few pointers on how to build your baby registry list.

1. SIMPLICITY WINS

Though a due date is a big deadline to meet, it isn’t like you won’t be able to do any shopping after your baby is born. In fact, it’s quite nice to buy some of your baby stuff once you’ve met your baby as it were.

So keep your list simple, base it on needs rather than wants and trendy Instagram-worthy stuff.

I guarantee you will still be surprised at how much stuff goes onto even a simple baby registry list!

2. FOCUS ON THE FIRST SIX MONTHS

One of the best ways to simplify your list is to focus on the first six months. Forget about second-stage car seats and weaning paraphernalia until nearer the time you need them.Though you might want to add a couple of items for your hospital bag essentials.

3. INCLUDE ITEMS AT A VARIETY OF PRICE POINTS

It’s good to include items at a variety of price points, that way everyone has the chance to buy something without feeling pressured into buying something they can’t afford.

It is totally fine to put big-ticket items such as nursery furniture and strollers onto your registry.

Particularly as registries such as AMAZON, TARGET and CRATE & BARREL offer group gifting. Group gifting is where gift-givers can choose to contribute towards the cost of something.

Plus groups of friends or family might well decide to club together to organise buying a stroller or crib.

If you feel awkward adding really big-ticket items, why not include a note in the introduction to your baby registry that lets everyone know it would be lovely if they chose to contribute to a big-ticket item rather than buy one outright.

We were lucky enough to have one great-grandparent-to-be buy us a stroller and my parents bought us a crib.

4. BREAK YOUR LIST DOWN INTO CATEGORIES

If you’re expecting your first baby you probably have a lot to research and it might well be overwhelming you.

A good tip is to break your baby product needs down into categories, so you can focus on one set of products at a time.

4. SHOULD YOU PUT DIAPERS ON YOUR REGISTRY?

It is equally good to include smaller ticket items. A lot of parents-to-be wonder if they should put diapers on their registry and the answer is a big fat YES!

Things like diapers may not be the most exciting to receive upfront, but it sure is exciting to know that the cost of basics like diapers and baby wipes have been covered by someone else, as the cost can really mount up.

You can use a diaper guide to work out how many to stock up on.

Plus Amazon offers a 20% discount for a year if you sign up to its baby registry.

5. SHOULD YOU PUT BABY CLOTHES ON YOUR REGISTRY?

This is a much-debated question. My suggestion is that you focus on baby clothes basics for the first three months.

The first set of baby clothes is often referred to as a layette. There are four big reasons that come to mind for holding off buying too many baby clothes in advance:

1. You will likely get bought baby clothes as gifts whether they are on the registry list or not.
2. It is nice to choose clothes that suit your baby, which you won’t be able to do until after they are born.
3. You won’t know how quickly your baby is going to grow, so it’s best to buy as the need arises.
4. It’s fun to buy or make clothes for your baby, so save some of that fun for after they are born

6. SHOULD YOU PUT TOYS ON YOUR REGISTRY?

I think this is one area where you can be really minimalist. Focus your main focus on getting a bouncer seat with perhaps some interesting things attached to amuse the baby and an activity mat.

Beyond that, you really do have plenty of time after the baby is born, plus this is another group of items that will often be gifted whether they’re on your registry or not.

7. SHOULD YOU PUT A BREASTPUMP ON YOUR REGISTRY?

Did you know that due to the Affordable Care Act most health care insurance companies will cover the cost of your breast pump and additional supplies?

So, unless you have a desire for a specific breast pump that your insurance company won’t supply, there is no need to register for a breast pump. Simply get in touch with your healthcare provider to get organized.

This is a good chance to mention that there is some debate around whether you should put postpartum care items on the registry for yourself.

I suggest you go what you feel comfortable with doing, you know your friends and family best. Take a look at my checklist of things you need after giving birth if it helps.

8. HOW MANY ITEMS SHOULD YOU HAVE ON YOUR REGISTRY?

There are no hard and fast rules about how many items to have on your baby registry. The average registry seems to have somewhere between 75 to 125 items on it. But ultimately, it is more important to put together a registry list that serves you well.

Don’t put stuff on just for the sake of it that you may well end up returning, but don’t be afraid to put stuff on there, it is a wish-list after all and you can always edit the list before you go through completion.

• Rain cover for the stroller – rain cover for pram or pushchair – buy the one that goes with your pram or pushchair brand
• Front baby carrier or sling
• Sunshades for the car windows
• Warm blanket or bunting bag to wrap baby in during winter strolls
• Diaper bag filled with diapers, wipes, diaper cream, spare outfit and portable changing mat, diaper bags, muslin, hand sanitizer, bottle warmer

• Baby formula – don’t stock up on too much in case you need to change to a different formula

BABY REGISTRY ETIQUETTE

It’s one thing creating your baby registry, it’s quite another sharing it and making sure you don’t fall foul of baby registry etiquette. Yes, there is such a thing!

Some of us might be more worried about it than others, but it really does pay to have a good idea of the dos and don’ts of sharing your baby registry.

That said, you should never feel bad about sharing details of your registry, remember that the average gift-buyer wants to buy something that the recipient wants, needs and will use.

So by sharing your registry, you are making life easier for them.

1. HOW AND WHEN TO SHARE YOUR BABY REGISTRY

A. WITH BABY SHOWER

I guess the big question here is whether or not someone will be throwing you a baby shower.

If they are, then it is absolutely fine to ask for the person organising the baby shower to give details of your baby registry along with the baby shower invite. It is generally frowned upon to put details directly on the invite.

The more accepted way is to include details on a separate insert or note. That way no-one feels obliged to buy from the registry.

B. WITHOUT BABY SHOWER

If you won’t be having a baby shower you will likely find that close friends and family ask you if there is something they can buy for the baby, at which point you can give them details of your registry.

2. HOW TO PERSONALIZE YOUR BABY REGISTRY

It’s a nice touch to add a personal message that can be seen at the top of your registry. Use this as a chance to show your gratitude to anyone considering buying you a gift from your registry.

This is also a good chance to include useful information, such as the gender of the baby if you know it and a nursery theme. Keep it warm but concise.

3. HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO STICK TO YOUR REGISTRY

First up, buying gifts for expectant parents and new babies isn’t mandatory and it is a lovely thing when someone buys a gift for someone else. Homemade and family-heirloom gifts can be just as wonderful to receive as all the stuff you think you will need for your new baby.

However, the great thing about a baby registry is that everyone who wants to buy you a gift has a list of everything you want and therefore has the chance to buy you something that they know you actually want. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone will stick to the list when choosing a gift for you.

However, there are things you can do to entice and encourage everyone to stick to your registry. Here are a few top tips:

1. Cover all price-points – make sure to have a wide range of price points. One of the biggest reasons for not buying on-list is because there is nothing within budget on the list
2. Big-ticket stuff – don’t be afraid to put big-ticket stuff on the list, this way those closest to you who want to buy or contribute towards the cost of a crib or stroller will know exactly the one to get
3. Persuasiveness – use your personalized introduction to persuade everyone to stick to the registry list because of the time you spent carefully researching it and the benefits that having something from the list will mean for you
4. Gift cards – Great for the terminally unorganized who leave it to the last minute and panic buy and great for those who don’t know you so well, like workmates.
5. Group gifting – also use your personalized introduction to flag up if there is a group-gifting option on the registry. This way friends and family can club together to buy a gift

4. CAN YOU ASK FOR CASH ON YOUR REGISTRY?

Well, the good news is that yes, of course, you can. In fact, it’s by far the easiest, least awkward way to ask those you aren’t super close to for cash.

The close alternative is to add gift cards to your list. Babylist.com and MyRegistry.com both allow you to ask for cash and all major baby registries have gift card options

And yes, online shopping is great and super convenient, but it is so useful to get out there and see baby products for yourself, touch them, try them, quiz the sales assistants in-store.

It could save you a lot of time returning stuff you don’t like or need after it has arrived.

And lastly, enjoy it! This is a magical time, especially if you are expecting your first baby.
