South Africa has 26 public universities located across its nine provinces. Students can still apply to attend these universities for the 2023 academic year, as many of their application periods are still open.
The University of South Africa (Unisa)
Unisa is the largest distance learning institution in South Africa. This means that most of their academic programmes take place online.
Unisa applications for the 2023 academic year open at the beginning of September 2022. The application period for undergraduate qualifications at Unisa will close on 14 October 2022. The application period for masters degrees and doctoral degrees will be open from 11 September 2022 and close approximately two months later on 14 November 2022.
Rhodes University
Located in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape, Rhodes University has a long and prestigious history. Students have until 30 November 2022 toapply for courses offered at Rhodes. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as space at the institution is limited.
The University of Fort Hare (UFH)
The University of Fort Hare offers a wide array of academic programmes to their students. The 2023 application period is not open. However, don't wait too long to apply as the closing date of 31 October 2022 is fast approaching.
The closing date for International applicants has already closed and no late applications will be accepted.
University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN)
The University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN) aims to establish a value-driven organisational culture that empowers the Institution and its people to achieve institutional goals. To join UKZN as a student, apply now for 2023.
Applications for the 2023 academic year will close on 30 September 2022. Unfortunately, applications for their Medicine programmes are already closed.
Applications for UKZN are done online through the Central applications Office (CAO).
The University of Zululand (UNIZULU)
The University of Zululand has opened applications for the 2023 academic year.
Unizulu is a comprehensive university offering more than 200 accredited degrees, diplomas and certificate courses. prospective students can have until 31 October 2022 to apply for admission for the 2023 academic year.

Sol Plaatje University (SPU)
Applications tostudy at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in the 2023 academic year are open. SPU offers a range of both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Prospective students can apply to study at the University by using the online application system. There is no application fee required to apply. Undergraduate and postgraduate applications for 2023 are now open and will close on 30 November 2022.
Durban University Of Technology (DUT)
The Durban University of Technology is a technical university that offers many different departments as well as short courses. Applications to study at the University are now open for 2023.
Applications for DUT are done online through the CAO, and will remain open until 30 September 2022 on at www.cao.ca.za online applications 2023.
University of Johannesburg (UJ)
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) offers a very wide range of courses from diplomas to degrees to postgraduate courses, as well as a wide range of online courses. These range from short courses to full certificates, continuing education programmes, degrees and postgraduate courses.
Application for UJ courses for the 2023 academic year will close on 30 October 2022.
The University of Free State (UFS)
The University of the Free State (UFS) aims to transform lives and inspire excellence. If you want to do the same, apply to study at UFS now. The universe has limited space available to students so don't delay your application to study at USF during the 2023 academic year.
Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)
Cape Peninsula University of Technology have opened their applications for the 2023 intake. CPUT aims to have an impact on the world of technology. Prospective students who want to attend CPUT in 2023 still have time to apply as the closing date for applications is 30 September 2022.
However, the application for Nursing and Bachelor of Education is already closed.
The University of the Western Cape (UWC)
The University of the Western Cape (UWC), is a national university committed to excellence in teaching and learning. UWC applications for the 2023 academic year are open and will remain open until 30 September 2022.
The University of Mpumalanga (UMP)
University of Mpumalanga is seen as a vital element of social, cultural and economical life in the Mpumalanga province. Students can till apply to study at the university in 2023.
Applications for the University of Mpumalangaclose on 30 November 2022. However, applications for some courses will close earlier including the Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching which will close on 30 September 2022.
Walter Sisulu University (WSU)
Walter Sisulu University (WSU) applications for the 2023 academic year are already open. WSU accepts online applications only. It is a free service and no payments are required.
The closing date for international applicants is 30 September 2022, and 31 October 2022 for South African applicants
University of Venda (UNIVEN)
The University of Venda (UNIVEN) is described as a comprehensive rural-based institution located in Limpopo. UNIVEN has officially opened their applications for those wanting to study at Univen in 2023.
The closing date for the application of UNIVEN admission 2023 has been scheduled between October 31, 2022 to November 30, 2022.
Vaal University of Technology (VUT)
Vaal University of Technology is now taking applications for those wanting to attend the University in 2023. Only online applications will be accepted.
Prospective students must apply online using the VUT application system iEnabler. Closing date: 30 September 2022.
Central University of Technology (CUT)
Central University of Technology (CUT) has two campuses located in Bloemfontein and Welkom. CUT has opened up their applications for 2023. CUT offers a variety of departments at their campuses.
