Unrivaled's Friday Night Extravaganza: A Night to Remember
The Unrivaled league delivered an unforgettable Friday night, leaving fans craving more. To expect better games would be an unfair demand, as the evening's entertainment was simply exceptional.
The Battle of the Titans: Laces vs. Phantom
The opening game set the tone for an incredible night. Laces and Phantom engaged in a thrilling back-and-forth battle, with Laces ultimately prevailing 76-75 thanks to Brittney Sykes' clutch game-winner. Laces dominated early, leading by 9 points after the first quarter. But Phantom's dynamic duo, Kelsey Plum and Aliyah Boston, had other ideas. They orchestrated a comeback, trimming the deficit to just 4 points by halftime.
And here's where it gets intriguing... In the third quarter, Plum and Boston combined for a 4-point play, showcasing their determination to stay in the game. Phantom even took the lead briefly, but Laces responded with an 8-0 run. However, Phantom wasn't done yet, as they started the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run to regain the advantage.
With the score tied at 73, the stage was set for a dramatic finish. Phantom, knowing a 3-pointer would seal the win, set up an easy basket for Boston, but left Laces with the ball and a chance to win. Sykes, with a smooth handoff sequence, created the perfect opportunity and knocked down the game-winning shot.
Laces' balanced offense was on full display, with four players reaching double figures. Alyssa Thomas led the charge with 19 points and 6 rebounds.
The Underdogs Strike: Hive vs. Rose
In a shocking turn of events, Hive, previously winless, defeated the unbeaten Rose team 78-75. This game proved that every team is beatable on any given night.
Hive came out swinging, with Ezi Magbegor and Kelsey Mitchell scoring early. Chelsea Gray, the 'Point Gawd', reached a league milestone, becoming the first player to score 400 points in Unrivaled. But Hive's momentum grew in the second quarter, with Sonia Citron and Saniya Rivers leading the charge. They entered halftime with a comfortable lead.
But Rose, the defending champions, fought back in the third quarter, with Gray and Azurá Stevens combining for 17 points. However, Hive maintained their composure and started the final quarter with a 12-point lead.
Rose made one last push, going on a 15-6 run to make it a 3-point game. But Hive's defense held strong, and Mitchell's drive to the basket sealed their first victory.
Gray and Stevens shone for Rose, with Gray achieving team-highs in points and assists. For Hive, Mitchell was the standout performer, nearly doubling her teammates' scores.
Now, only Lunar Owls remain winless, while Rose joins Laces at the top of the league standings with a 3-1 record. The league has been turned upside down, and the competition is wide open!
