What is the meaning of security update? ›

Definitions: A patch, upgrade, or other modification to code that corrects security and/or functionality problems in software.

An update is new, improved, or fixed software that replaces older versions of the same software. For example, updating your operating system brings it up-to-date with the latest drivers, system utilities, and security software. Updates are often provided by the software publisher free of additional charge.

Well, if you have a high-value account, then you should definitely use an updated device. If you can afford it, you probably want to use an updated device for safety and a peace of mind. If you can't afford a new phone, as long as you don't run into an exploit, you probably won't have a problem.

Patching is an important practice to protect your company against malware, ransomware, and hacking attempts. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends applying relevant patches to your devices as soon as possible to avoid putting your business at risk.

So your phone is more at risk of malware, hackers, etc. compared to phones still receiving updates. However, most people don't tend to directly experience issues. Phones aren't automatically hacked just because updates stop.
