Ooty is located in Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu. The Nilgiri Hills form the part of Western Ghats. Ooty has a subtropical highland climate under Koppen's climate classification system. This climate exists in the high altitude regions of earth which lie within the tropics or subtropics. The tropic regions are those which lie near the equator of earth and the sub tropic regions are those which lie immediately north or south of the tropic regions.

Thus due to the hilly location of Ooty it is cooler than other cities of Tamil Nadu like Coimbatore whose location in flat.

Ooty is located in the Blue Mountains (Nilgiri hills) of the Western Ghats. It is a high altitude area and a perfect destination for spending holidays during summers due to the cool climate.

The main reason behind it being a cool place is its position on Western ghats. The main reason why this beautiful place is cool is as follows:

The air on the surface of earth at ground level (measured according to level of sea water) gets heated up due to the suns radiation; when this hot air climbs the slopes of western ghats, it gets cool down due to loosing its energy and thus wind becomes cooler. Since Ooty is situated on higher altitudes, by the time this air reaches there it has become very much cool and pleasant.
This is the main scientific reason behind the low temperature in hill stations like Ooty.
