States with the most number of crimes

  • Uttar Pradesh: Uttar Pradesh holds the dubious distinction of having the highest crime rate in India, registering a staggering 112.7 crimes per 100,000 people. This northern state also contributes significantly to the national crime statistics, accounting for a substantial 15.4% of all reported crimes in the country. Several interconnected factors contribute to this alarming trend. Firstly, Uttar Pradesh's vast population plays a crucial role in the prevalence of crime. Furthermore, a low literacy rate can hinder social development and contribute to criminal activities
  • Kerala: Kerala has the second-highest crime rate in India, with 98.6 crimes per 100,000 people. The state has the highest charge-sheeting rate of 94.9%, which indicates that most of the cases are investigated and prosecuted by the police. The main reasons for the high crime rate in Kerala are the high urbanization, the high literacy rate, the high awareness among the public, and the high reporting of crimes.
  • Maharashtra: Furthermore, Maharashtra ranks as the third-highest in terms of crime rate within India, recording 88.4 crimes per 100,000 people. Notably, the state accounts for a significant 10.2% of the total reported crimes in the nation. Several factors contribute to this elevated crime rate. Firstly, rapid industrialization has led to complex socio-economic changes. Secondly, the migration of people from rural to urban areas has presented challenges in terms of social integration and employment opportunities. Moreover, economic disparities persist, which can fuel criminal activities. Additionally, organized crime syndicates play a role in shaping the state's crime landscape.
  • Delhi: Delhi has the fourth-highest crime rate in India, with 87.2 crimes per 100,000 people. The state has the highest crime rate among all union territories and also among all urban areas. The main factors behind the high crime rate in Delhi are the high population density, the influx of migrants from different states, the lack of social cohesion, and the inadequate police force.
  • Bihar: Bihar has the fifth-highest crime rate in India, with 86.9 crimes per 100,000 people. The state accounts for 8.9% of the total crimes reported in the country. The main reasons for the high crime rate in Bihar are the low development index, the poverty and unemployment, the feudal and patriarchal society, and the political interference in law and order.
  • Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu has the sixth-highest crime rate in India, with 85.8 crimes per 100,000 people. The state has a high charge-sheeting rate of 91.7%, which shows that most of the cases are resolved by the police. The main causes of the high crime rate in Tamil Nadu are the high literacy rate, the high awareness among the public, and the high reporting of crimes.
  • Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh has the seventh-highest crime rate in India, with 84.5 crimes per 100,000 people. The state reports 14% of all rape cases and 12% of all kidnapping cases in the country. The major factors behind the high crime rate in Madhya Pradesh are the low sex ratio, the gender discrimination, and the social backwardness.
  • Rajasthan: Rajasthan has the eighth-highest crime rate in India, with 83.6 crimes per 100,000 people. The state reports 13% of all rape cases and 11% of all kidnapping cases in the country. The main reasons for the high crime rate in Rajasthan are the low literacy rate, the child marriage, and the dowry system.
  • Assam: Assam has the ninth-highest crime rate in India, with 82.4 crimes per 100,000 people. The state reports 10% of all murder cases in the country. The major causes of the high crime rate in Assam are the ethnic and religious conflicts, the insurgency and terrorism, and the illegal immigration.
  • Gujarat: Gujarat has the tenth-highest crime rate in India, with 81.3 crimes per 100,000 people. The state has the highest charge-sheeting rate of 97.1%, which indicates that most of the cases are dealt with by the police. The main factors behind the high crime rate in Gujarat are the communal violence, the drug trafficking, and the cybercrime.
