After news broke last week that McDonald’s and Subway would pull locations from inside Walmart stores, it didn’t take long for the Golden Arches to clear out of one Lehigh Valley store.
By Saturday, nothing was left to show McDonald’s was ever inside the Walmart off of MacArthur Road in Whitehall Township.
The Wall Street Journal first reported that after 30 years, McDonald’s would part ways with the national discount retailer.
There used to be 1,000 McDonald’s restaurants inside Walmarts, but after the latest closures there will be about 150 left, the paper reported.
Subway franchisees also reported they will close locations inside Walmarts.
Both eateries cited low foot traffic, which was attributed to more online shopping, customers using Walmart’s curbside pickup, and the COVID-19 pandemic’s limitation on indoor dining and increase in drive-thru visits.
Walmart was looking to replace some of the restaurants with Yum Brand’s Taco Bell and Domino’s Pizza, CNBC reported.
