The MMULT function returns the matrix product of two arrays. The result is an array with the same number of rows as array1 and the same number of columns as array2.

MMULT, a Math & Trigonometry function in Excel, stands for “Matrix Multiplication.” It returns the product of two arrays of two matrices where the number of rows of Matrix 1 equals the number of columns of Matrix 2.

Multiply numbers in a cell

To do this task, use the * (asterisk) arithmetic operator. For example, if you type =5*10 in a cell, the cell displays the result, 50.

MMULT returns the #VALUE! error when: Any cells are empty or contain text. The number of columns in array1 is different from the number of rows in array2.

According to the Microsoft documentation, MMULT returns the matrix product of two arrays while SUMPRODUCT multiplies corresponding components in the given arrays, and returns the sum of those products.
