SAP PI and SAP PO are used in everyday use differently from the meaning they actually represent.

The difference is simple. It would not be right to call any of its different meanings wrong.

SAP PI (process integration) is actually part of the SAP PO (process orchestration) family of products; just like BPM, BRM, etc. But for versions 7.1 to 7.31 (and especially dual-stack ABAP+JAVA) over time, PI; for the 7.5 (single stack JAVA) version, it is generally called PO.

PI communicates with both SAP and non-SAP systems using the many adapters on it. It definitely does not need another SAP system for integration and is designed to work seamlessly even in an ecosystem that does not contain any SAP products.

While integrating with other systems, it uses many adapters such as Database(JDBC), SOAP, File, FTP, SFTP, Mail(SMTP), REST, EDI...
