Do you think that HR department is Not a support system? If no, can you relate to it with the direct revenue generation or increase in revenue? If you’re unable to answer these questions, you may be one of the reason for the dawdling growth of HR.The standard pay structure of Human Resource Personnel has not changed much in India.According to a survey, HR personnel are still paid around ₹120,000 to180,000 per annum at the early stage of their career. However, things are different with other departments. They have seen immense increase in the pay structure.Have you ever thought of the reason, why?1. Lack of quality education in Institutions:In India, there are more than 4500 MBA/PGDM/MHRM/MSW colleges and Institutes where more than 4 lac students pass out every single year and around 1.20 HR professionals step in to real “professional“ world. However, out of these 1.20 lac HR professionals, most of the HR professionals have no idea what an HR does and if asked they will just talk about the different domain of HR likerecruitment, payroll, performance, etc.Half of graduates even don’t know the importance of HR and if asked any decision making questions, they go blank. The main reason of it is the curriculum that they generally go through.Instead of making students work on live projects, decision making case studies and understanding the core system of the HR, they are taught the things that doesn’t even matter. It is very important to understand topics like bell-curve, 360 degree and 720 degree feedback system but they are not followed by more than 90% of companies in India. It is always good to know the history and different aspects or system of any process but in the real corporate world, it doesn’t work.So obviously with these kind of learning, no company would like to invest much because anyhow their real learning will be in the work.2. Lack of passion / Ambition:Passion goes out with every single career. If you’re not passionate about the career you have chosen, you’re going to fail. Most of the students do not have any idea what career they’re going to pursue butyes they want to pursue higher education for sure.Instead of taking time to understand their interest and relating it with their career, they choose what they are not interested in and hence fail.A survey decoded that 60% of students thinks HR is less hectic and is an administrative job and thus they choose their career in HR.With no passion and with this mindset if one steps into the world of Human Resource it is suicidal for their career.3. HR as a support systemVery few organization in India believes that HR department can have impact on the company’s revenue. Most of the organization still believes HR as a support system. However, HR personnel have also not shown any interest in linking themselves with the revenue and thus, most of the organization considers HR department as an indirect cost to them. However,it is duty of an HR professional to explain to the management the importance of HR department and linking it to the revenue of the organization. It is needless to say that any organization understand in terms of profit and loss and thus HR have to link the same. For example, relating training and development sessions with the cost occurred and the effect of that in terms of monetary value. Most of the HR personnel have failed to do so and have continued to work only as a support system and thus helping organization to go firm on their belief andthus bringing down the average salary of the HR Professionals.4. Lack of LearningIt is very important for any professional to learn on the job, so that they can scale ahead in their career. With a tag of support system and only administrative duties, an HR hardly learns anything except improving on negotiation skills and administrative duties. It is very important to question what value an HR Professional adds to the organizational growth and development. In interviews I have always asked the HR professionals how can they help me improve my department because I can afford other HR professional with much lower cost to the organization, who can take care of the administrative duties. But most of the time they are unable to answer anything and even if they do, their answers does not make any sense. Most of the time candidates answering questions related to HR analytics give formulas to calculate attrition rate, cost per employee, etc instead of suggesting any plan.It is very important to understand that HR analytics is not about formulas but it is a decision making data for future predictions. It all happens because they have not learned anything on their last job. This a reason which leads to poor quality professionals and thus reduce their market value.5. Poor attention towards labor lawHR department is the soul of the organization and it helps employees and management in various ways.It is duty of an HR to save employees tax and at the same time helping organization to save their tax as well. That’s why the salary bifurcation, benefits, and other several tax saving components comes into picture. It is very important for an HR to understand the law, where they learn how they can benefit both, the employer and the employee. However, with almost no knowledge on the law and practices, these things are generally taken care by someone else which again makes the management question. Why we should pay you, if your responsibility is taken care by someone else.6. Entrance of under qualified HR ProfessionalsIn the last few years, recruitment agencies have started with a new format where they generally hire candidates with no or less qualification in HR.This shows that how organizations have started taking the HR department as employees who can make calls and just send candidates to interview locationafter getting few details from them. Most of the recruitment agencies for example don’t even understand the importance of knowing the candidate and basic decision making that can be done using the data they accumulate. However, if the business is growing with such less paid employees, why they should pay a qualified HR Professional.7. HR Considered as Non-Important Factor in CompanyBusiness requirement believes that HR can’t Contribute in Business Growth, Profitability, Branding, Seles & Marketing of Products and Services. One of the survey Defines that HR is just an Administration Part of the company which rule general administration of department which can be done by any of qualified or semi-qualified person. For Example, there are many people in the HR Department who are basically not from HR Background but doing work of HR & Administration. This is a one of the biggest challenge in existence of HR Department. Industries Believes that if others can perform HR Activities that why they need to hire Specialized people this leads to HR people to work in less paid job.Now a day it becomes trend of hiring HR in less paid salary as it is function which can be performed by anyone. So why pay high if the same available at very low. There might be more reasons which may result in the stagnation of pay structure in HR but these are some of the common reason.

Agreed with the question!! Since I really wonder that people in this fields especially working as HR, Admin, ER, P&A, OD, L&D and what not are the key drivers of any of organizations and I guess no one would be so stabilized than any of other cross functional!Yes, Education system goes down due to multiplicity of Colleges, Universities & Competition too. However looking at these scenario, it’s a high time to tolerate such partiality!! Hoping that soon new revolutions takes place especially in developing country like India! Since India is the leading youth compared to any of the corner of the world. I found there is end number of talent in this sector but mostly new ideas and talent not come up due to introvert kind of personality (The fear of “Log Kya Kahenge”). Youth need to come forward and must share their views, ideas, actions & various valuable and positive way forward which are actually beneficial to an individual, society, organisation & community in which we are living around .Be unique! Be a part of Change. United we stand & divided we fall Great thought and Nice Question!! Keep Sharing.RegardsKetan M Solanki
